milkcart.com.au // @milkcart // Milkcart
How and when did your label begin?
Milkcart started when Ryan and I found ourselves in a new house with very little furniture, and nothing in our price range that we liked. We made a few items for ourselves and then started making the odd piece for sale. What started as a weekend hobby in our back shed quickly turned into an exciting full time business for us and we formally began Milkcart just over two years ago.
Who is involved?
Milkcart is made of husband and wife duo Marnie and Ryan McKnight - every single item is designed and made from scratch by the two of us in our workshop.
Where do you find inspiration? Are there any local sources?
We draw inspiration from Mid Century Scandinavian design, but add in a distinct Aussie flavour influenced by sun drenched Australian
Perth is seen as an emerging city, particularly for creative industries - do you feel like there are more opportunities in WA right now?
Although we live on the other coast, we are follow a lot of creatives from WA on instagram, and the quality of design from there is inspiring. As a whole in Australia, I feel there are more oppurtunities for creatives than ever before; the handmade sector is growing daily, and with social media and online shopping, the platform on which to promote and sell, as well as encourage and inspire, is huge!
What do you think makes designing in Australia unique?
Australia is physically removed from the rest of the world, and although we all have access to the same images on Pinterest etc, we have very different resources local to us, and different environmental conditions to be aware of. Having lived long periods of time overseas, we can appreciate that there is a distinct difference in Australian design - kind of a quirk of being just a little different which applies in fashion, furniture, architecture, everything.
What is your label known for?
Milkcart is known for our signature practical design and individually handcrafted furniture.
Where is your favourite hometown spot?
We live in a small suburb in South Sydney and are big fans of the local jetty and park we can totally relax and feel we are miles away from everything, but actually only ten minutes walk from our front door. When we visit WA, we always love to stop by Margaret River.
What are your favourite local buildings?
We are big fans of old terraced houses and workmans cottages which we feel encapsulate the true feeling of Australia, community, where we are going, and where we have been.
What is the best thing about being involved in the design industry?
We love being a part of this exciting industry, being able to use our creative side, as well as run a successful business and be part of such a supportive community. We are constantly inspired, challenged and rewarded which makes our work life feel alot less like work and more like being paid to do something we love.
What should we expect to see from your brand/label in the future?
This year, we are fine tuning some of our existing designs and are releasing limited edition collaborations with some other local designers - the first of which was a line of sideboards with Design Twins, and the next one will be launched next month!
